An EU passport is issued by a European Union country and falls under the joint EC Regulation 2252/2004. An EU passport can be recognised in the following ways:
As of 1 September 2006, passports issued by Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland meet the same security standards as EU passports, and are therefore approved ID documents.
On the other hand, national ID cards from a different country are not approved ID documents and cannot be used as proof of your identity. This is because national ID cards are not covered by a common standard in the joint EC Regulation 2252/2004.
