When you move, you must report your change of address to the Swedish Tax Agency so that the population register can be updated correctly. Reporting your change of address is free of charge and can be done quickly and easily using our e-service.
Check that the details listed for you in the population register are correct, and remember to notify the Swedish Tax Agency when you move. For schools, healthcare and the community to function properly, it’s important for all individuals to be registered at the specific address at which they live.

It’s easy to make spelling errors or write the wrong apartment number, but these mistakes are avoidable. Check that your address is registered correctly.
Being registered at the wrong address is unnecessary – and it’s also illegal. It’s an issue that can have a major impact – both on you and society at large.
It’s not always easy to decide which address you should be registered at. Below are some examples of what to do in different circumstances, but do contact the Swedish Tax Agency if you are uncertain or have other questions.
If you have children under the age of 18 who will be moving with you to your new home, you must include their details in your change of address notification.
If you have shared custody of a child, and the child’s other parent or guardian is not moving to the same address, that parent or guardian must consent to the child’s move. The other parent or guardian can give their consent via our e-service.
If you move away from home to study at a college or university, you must report your change of address to the Swedish Tax Agency. This is the case whether you stay with a friend, live in student accommodation, or rent your own flat. Regardless of whether you remain in the same town or move away to a new area, you must notify the Swedish Tax Agency of the address of your new home.
If you go away to study at a secondary or upper-secondary school located elsewhere, provided that you live at your registered address during school holidays, you do not need to report the move. This applies even if your studies are due to last for more than a year.
If you are moving abroad to study and your studies are scheduled to last one year or more, you must report your change of address to the Swedish Tax Agency. The same applies if you initially plan to live abroad for a shorter period of time but extend your stay to one year or more. You retain your Swedish citizenship and personal identity number even if you move from Sweden.

You retain your Swedish citizenship and personal identity number even if you move away from Sweden. Remember to notify the Swedish Tax Agency if you change your address abroad so that you do not miss out on important information or lose the opportunity to vote in the Swedish Parliamentary elections. Use the form Ny adress/röstlängd för utvandrad, Anmälan (SKV 7842).
You must be registered at the address where you live, regardless of whether you have become someone’s lodger or are renting sublet accommodation. Make sure you put your name on the door or postbox to ensure that your mail is delivered. Take care to write the correct apartment number when reporting your change of address. You cannot register an address care of (c/o) the primary tenant or owner of the property.
If you rent out your house or flat to someone else and no longer live there yourself, you must be registered at the specific address at which you live. Only the person or persons renting the accommodation should be registered there. To ensure effective community planning and welfare services such as housing benefit, residential property owners, primary tenants and subletters must all be registered correctly.
To ensure an effective postal service, the subletter’s name should be on the front door or postbox. It is no longer possible for a subletter to register a care of address (c/o).
Be sure to check with your landlord whether or not subletting is permitted.
Send us a change of address notification, providing us with as much information as possible. The Swedish Tax Agency can then make an assessment as to the address at which you should be registered: either at one of the addresses at which you are living intermittently; or at another address altogether, to which you have the strongest connection. If you are moving away for a shorter period, you can remain registered at your primary address until you know where you plan to live permanently.
Please contact the Swedish Tax Agency if you are uncertain which address you should be registered at.
You don’t need to report a change of address if you are planning to live somewhere else for less than a year.
If, however, you plan to move between several different places of residence, you usually have to be registered at the address with which you have the strongest connection. Typically, this is the place where you usually sleep or spend the night. Other circumstances – such as the place where your family lives – may help to determine the address at which you should be registered. Outline your situation in your change of address notification, and the Swedish Tax Agency will assess where you should be registered. Please contact the Swedish Tax Agency if you feel uncertain about anything.

Generally speaking, you should be registered at the address at which you most often sleep. For the majority of people, this will be their permanent place of residence rather than their holiday home. However, if you live in your holiday home most of the time, you should probably be registered there. You should generally be listed in the Swedish Population Register at the property where you sleep. This applies even if your home can be moved. You should be registered at the property on which your caravan or motorhome is parked, or where your boat is moored. The property could be a residential address, a campsite or a harbour, for example.
If you move your home between different locations, you still have to be registered as living at one of these places.
Please provide as much information as possible when you notify us of your change of address. This will help us to determine the address at which you should be registered. Your registered address could be the place where your home is currently located, an address at which you sometimes stay, or a property with which you have a significant connection.
You are welcome to contact the Swedish Tax Agency if you are not certain of where you should be registered.
If you are not going to return to the address currently registered for you in the Swedish Population Register, you must notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your change of address. If you do not know where you are going to live, or do not have a significant connection to any specific address, you will be listed in the Swedish Population Register in the municipality to which you are most strongly connected. This is often the most recent municipality in which you were registered. If you don’t find the answers to your questions, or are not sure what to do, feel free to contact the Swedish Tax Agency, and we’ll help you.
Most people in Sweden are registered at the correct address. However, it is illegal to have incorrect information stored in the population register. Anyone who deliberately omits to report a change of address, or deliberately submits incorrect or incomplete information to the Swedish Tax Agency, is committing a crime. A genuine mistake is not a crime, but sometimes an investigation by the police or the Swedish Prosecution Authority needs to be carried out to establish whether or not a criminal offence connected with the population register has been committed.
The Swedish Tax Agency is obliged to report any suspected crime connected with the population register. Other authorities and private individuals can also report crimes to the police. A person who is convicted of a population register offence may receive a fine or a prison sentence of up to two years.
Accurate population registration is vital in enabling the whole of society to function. For this reason, the requirement for people to be registered at the address at which they live was reinforced through the introduction of new legislation in 2018. Making a deliberate mistake was made a criminal offence once again, to emphasise the seriousness of the issue.
